Why custom contact lenses?
Customizable contact lenses are typically considered when patients have suboptimal vision with traditional lens options. Patients may have acquired eye problems, genetic corneal disorders, or other irregularities that require a customizable contact lens to improve their vision and comfort.
Here is a list of conditions why customizable contact lenses are considered:
Keratoconus
Pellucid marginal degeneration
Post surgical corneas:
Corneal transplants
Refractive surgery or laser corrective surgery
LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis)
PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy)
RK (Radial Keratotomy)
Pterygium excision or removal
Corneal scarring
Corneal dystrophies
Dry eye syndrome
Chronic inflammatory conditions
High or irregular astigmatism
Aniridia
Aphakia
Customizable contact lens options
Multifocal soft lenses, presbyopia, near blur, computer blur, light sensitivity, tint, albinism, iris.
-
Scleral contact lenses are hard lenses that are large in diameter. Typically, these lenses larger in diameter than traditional contact lenses, they cover the entire cornea and rest on the white part of the eye, known as the sclera.
-
Hybrid lenses are a combination of a hard and soft contact lens. The center of the lens is hard and the edge is soft. These lenses provide the sharp optics of a hard lens with the comfort of a soft lens.
-
RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) are hard contact lenses that are small in diameter. Though not as common as soft contact lenses, RGP lenses offer a number of advantages over soft lenses.
-
Traditional soft lenses can often work effectively for most patients. However, they can have limitations for those that require more specific needs. Custom soft lenses are available when limitations are met with traditional soft lenses, especially for patients when their vision requirements are beyond what traditional soft lenses can provide.
